An integrated Bridges marketing campaign inspired local commuters to discover a better way to navigate the Peninsula while a dynamic new web site tracked their progress.

The results were impressive. Residents logged 43,000+ trips, traveled 789,000+ miles, saved 207+ tons of emissions, burned more than 3.3 million calories, and accrued over $204,000 total commute savings.

The lunch-time BART Blue Sky celebration featured more than 50 environmental exhibitors, carnival games with an eco-twist, a Segway obstacle course, the iconic BARTmobile and lively music.

To highlight the importance of a smart commute, Bridges featured threatened species throughout the month-long campaign. One treatment read:

“Hummingbirds, known for their efficient use of self-generated energy, are at risk — an estimated 34 species are endangered or vulnerable due to changes in their environment.

Like hummingbirds, BART is energized by the ride. Because when BART cars brake, they convert energy. 80 percent of that braking energy is recaptured to power other BART trains.”
